This is how I learnt all piano chords without doubt. I also believe the steps below will help you too.
1) I know all my 12 keys scale
And I practice using circle of 4ths or 5ths (if you have little or no idea of the major and minor scale of the 12 keys, read our previous tutorials).
2) numbering
What I mean by numbering is, you'll know all your scale numbering, I'm not talking about hand position.
Example key C
C D E F G A B C D E F G A
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13
that's all key C numbering.
3) Knw all your minor chord and major chord with their inversion.
Without knowing all major and minor chord 1st & 2nd inversion it'll be hard
4) listening to which chord you hear, and think within a sec
For example
Since u knw
Your
1 is Doh
2 is Re
3 is Mi
4 is Fah
5 is Sol
6 is La
7 is Ti
Notice
When it comes to Doh again which is on the next octave, it will be written as 8 instead of 1
8 is Doh
9 is Re
10 is Mi
11 is Fah
12 is Sol
13 is La
No 14
Why? Because 13th is the chord piano reach.
So wen you hear something like Cadd9
Its means press C major and add 9
What is C major? It is CEG
what is 9? It is D which is Re the 2nd
So;
Cadd9 will be CDEG.
How about C11 chord?
Quick notice:
If any chord didn't have maj7 maj9 maj11 maj13
If its only The key and number
E.g
C11
Ab7
B13
Bb9
Its means you'll always flat your 7th which is "Ti"
Or sharp your "La"
So C11 will be
Another quick notice:
Whenever a chord is more than 7
If small "m" is used, it represents minor ( e.g. Cm11 or Em11)
If its only letter and number like
C11
D11
E7
B13
Its means
The chord is major
So C11 will be
1 3 5 flat 7 add 2
C E G Bb D
Remember I said
2 will become 9
3 will be 10
So on and forth.
We have types of triad chords
Major chord which is C E G
Minor chord which is C Eb G
Augmented chord which is C E Ab
Diminished chord which is C Eb Gb
Well this two is also triad one way and the other
Cos its also required 3 note
Suspended2
Sus2 which is C D G
Suspended4
Sus4 which is C F G
So whenever you hear
Press Caugmented 7
Just knw that since Caug7 is neither minor or major
But it's already been called an augmented
So it'll be
Caug7
C E Ab Bb
How about C7sus4?
You'll first know your Chord is not either minor or major Or Aug But suspended
So you'll know
Your C7sus4 is
C F G Bb
How about Cm11?
Check that chord..
The Chord let's us knw that its a minor chord Not major
So definitely
It'll be
1 flat 3rd 5th and flat 7th and 9 and 11
Cm11 will be C Eb G Bb D F
See why 7th "Ti" is flattened in a chord
C minor scale are:
C =1
D=2
Eb=3
F=4
G=5
Ab=6
Bb=7
C=8
C major scale
C=1
D=2
E=3
F=4
G=5
A=6
B=7
C=8
In major scale and minor scale,
The 4th is always 4th key
The 5th is always the key
That's why they're call
Perfect fifth
Perfect fourth
This is why "Ti" 7th key is flatted
Because its also in diatonic scale
