SEQUENCE AND TRANSITION:
Placement of materials in their proper sequence makes it clear and in the right pace. There will be then no confusion as to what happens first, what followed, and so on.
According to Edith Ohaja, "One device for preventing ambiguity and achieving overall clarity in an article is the transition. Transition are like the mortar that holds blocks together in a building. They may be single words, phrases, sentences, or even paragraphs."
In article writing, they are mostly used to start new paragraphs as a contrast, deviation, or continuation.
Their usage:
1. To continue, or stress a point: Eg, furthermore, besides, also, consequently, in addition, moreover, etc.
2. To add points: Eg, similarly, in the same vein.
3. To contrast an idea: Eg, however, conversely, on the other hand, but, nevertheless, etc.
4. To draw attention: eg, since, due to, because of, as a result, therefore, etc.
5. To prevent leapfrogging ( if you don't know what leapfrogging means, review our past lectures).
